Māori Language Moment

We participated in the Māori Language Moment with the rest of Aotearoa.  We all came together as an akomanga and sang waiata together.

Te whatu o Poutini - The stone of Poutini

We have been learning the pūrākau of Poutini.  We learnt all about the different pounamu that you can find.  We talked about where we might find pounamu and what the pounamu was used for (trading for different items our whānau might need).  Then we organised ourselves into whānau rōpū and went searching for pounamu in our kura 'awa'.  When we had all found a piece of pounamu we took it back to the Marae and Whaea Lisa swapped it for kumera.  We discovered that different pounamu were worth different amounts of kumera.  We had a discussion about why this might be.  Next time we search for pounamu we will try and make sure that we collect the rare and beautiful kinds so we could get more kai for our whānau.  Have a look at us collecting pounamu and then trading it as well as working out how much kumera their whānau.
