Being Scientists and Observing

Today on our way back from Gymnastics some of us collected lots of things that we found along the way.  When we got back to kura we put them on a table and we observed them.  First, we talked about what observing meant.  We decided that it meant looking carefully at something.  It was about describing what we could see not saying what it was we were looking at.  We observed all the things that we had collected.

These are some of our observations:
There is something inside of the spikey thing.
I can smell lemons when I smell the flower.
The flowers are soft.
The spikey thing is green and pointy.
The inside of the spikey thing is brown and white.  When you touch it, it feels fluffy.  It smells funny.
The leaf is brown with spikey edges.
The stick is smooth and bendy.
This is metal, it is hard like a knife.
The green leaf looks like a knife shape.
It is prickly.
The stick is hard and feels rough.
The stone is rough and black and hard.

Then we talked to our friends and decided to put all the things in different groups.

We put all the leaves together in one group.  We also put the flowers together and the sticks together.  We decided to put all the spikey things together in one group.

We sorted things by colour.  We had a brown group and a green group and a pink one and a yellow one.
